Event Date 1: September 19, 2012 06:20 pm - 07:20 pm
As part of the U.S. Department of Education’s third annual back-to-school bus tour, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller will visit Glenwood Leadership Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in Evansville, Ind., for a panel discussion on labor management collaboration and community partnership in education. The panel will include Miller, Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association (NEA); Dennis Smith, superintendent of Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation; and Keith Gambill, president of the Evansville Teachers Association. The audience will include teachers, union leaders, parents and community members.
Glenwood Leadership Academy is using School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds from the U.S. Department of Education to turn around the school and to improve student achievement. Since 2009 Indiana has received a total of $79,905,432 in SIG funding to support a total of 15 schools.
Glenwood Leadership Academy also is an NEA Priority School. The school is focused on college preparedness, leadership and service learning. Enrichment programs are available in the subject areas of art, music—including the Culver-Glenwood Drumline—leadership, and world languages.
These bus tour engagements are part of a series of events and community conversations being held coast-to-coast by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and his leadership team from Sept. 12-21 to highlight the theme that Education Drives America.
