Event Date 1: February 06, 2014 08:30 am - 05:00 pm

As part of the U.S. Department of Education’s ongoing outreach to higher education stakeholders in developing a college ratings system, the Department will seek feedback from national experts at a technical symposium on Thursday, Feb. 6.

Hosted by the Department’s National Center for Education Statistics, the symposium will feature experts from about 20 higher education institutions and organizations and will be comprised of several panels of four to five presenters and a moderator. John Easton, director of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), will provide opening remarks.

The symposium will be an opportunity to discuss a range of topics that will help in developing the Department’s college ratings systems. Among the topics are data elements, metrics, methods of data collection, methods of scoring, presentation, and frameworks for assessing the performance of higher education institutions.

The symposium stems from President Obama’s call to action last August, where he outlined an ambitious new agenda to combat rising college costs and make college affordable for American families. He called on the entire higher education community to collaborate on how to promote college value, access and affordability. In support of these efforts, the Department of Education has met with thousands of leaders and stakeholders http://www.ed.gov/blog/2013/12/college-ratings-listening-tour-college-value-and-affordability/ to gather feedback, and in the months ahead, will continue to consult with stakeholders across the higher education community on ways to best craft the college ratings system.

A summary of symposium proceedings, as well as other resources identified by presenters and attendees, will be published on the Department’s college affordability and completion website http://www.ed.gov/college-affordability.

The symposium is open to the public, and attendees will be asked to register on-site. Attendees will have an opportunity to raise technical questions that will be shared with presenters during the symposium. This event was originally scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
