Alberto Retana, U.S. Department of Education's director of community outreach, will visit Chester, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, Aug. 19, to meet with elected officials, religious leaders, students, parents and others to highlight local efforts to increase student achievement. The Achievement Project (TAP), a nonprofit organization that helps young people in Chester to succeed in high school and college, is hosting the event.

Retana's visit is part of the community's continued efforts to stem violence in Chester, where jobs are scarce and low-performing schools are plentiful. The violence led local leaders to declare a state of emergency during the month of June. The local government, religious leaders, the business community, parents and students are working to end the violence and create an environment where students can complete high school, go on to college, and better their community.
