U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will discuss the importance of helping Hispanic students achieve educational excellence at the opening session of the 2nd Annual Idaho Summit on Educational Excellence About Hispanic Students on Wednesday, July 21, at 8:30 a.m. at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. Meléndez de Santa Ana will focus on how the Department's plans for reform support the state's work on the ground, Idaho's role in the national education reform movement, the importance of Latino student success for the future of Idaho and the country, and her own experience in improving the achievement of elementary and secondary school students.

Deputy Director José A. Rico, of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans, will deliver the luncheon keynote address, via Skype connection, at 1 p.m. Rico will discuss the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and issues pertaining to Hispanic students, such as the academic achievement gap, dropout rates, college access and financial aid, and how community engagement can improve Latino academic achievement.
