Secretary Duncan to Visit Bay Area: Meet with Educators, Congresswoman; Deliver Commencement Addresses

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit California’s Bay Area Friday, meeting with educators and U.S. Rep. Lynn Woolsey in the afternoon, then stressing the value of a college education during two commencement addresses Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Upon arriving, Secretary Duncan will proceed to Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, Calif. There at 12:15 p.m., he will discuss education reform issues with Rep. Woolsey, along with regional superintendents, principals, teachers and students.

At 6 p.m., Duncan will deliver the commencement address at Foothill College’s graduation ceremony in Los Altos Hills. On Saturday, the secretary will travel to Cupertino, where he will address graduating seniors at De Anza College. In both speeches, he will explore the importance of community colleges in generating a vibrant economy and enabling the pursuit of the American dream. The addresses will focus on immigrants and first-generation college students as the beneficiaries of the opportunities afforded by a community college education.
