Secretary Duncan, Delegated Deputy Secretary King to Give Brief Remarks at Teach to Lead Supporter Summit at US Department of Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and John King, senior advisor delegated duties of deputy secretary of education, will both speak at the Teach to Lead Supporter Summit on Monday, December 7, at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The summit is hosted by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and ASCD for the more than100 supporting organizations of Teach to Lead. King will deliver opening remarks in the morning and then later in the day at 3:30 p.m. ET, Duncan will discuss the power of teacher leadership, and the importance of investing in the experts — teachers.

In its first year, Teach to Lead has engaged with more than 3,700 educators, in-person and online. The initiative has given voice to more than 875 teacher leadership ideas in 42 states. This summit will celebrate the tremendous success of the first year of Teach to Lead, plan for Teach to Lead’s continued growth in 2016, and allow supporters to network with others in the field as we build a movement in teacher leadership.

During the Summit, Teach to Lead will also launch the new online platform, edConnectr, an innovative education matchmaking service to help educators connect, converse, and collaborate. Teach to Lead supporting organizations and participants will be able to connect with one another, upload materials, and access resources to help further their work.

The Teach to Lead initiative focuses on expanding opportunities for teacher leadership in ways that enhance student learning and make it possible for teachers to stay in the classroom, while leading in the profession. This past year, the initiative hosted Teacher Leadership Summits in Louisville, Denver, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Washington State, helping teachers develop their ideas into action plans that would advance student success.
