U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will join First Lady Michelle Obama, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and education stakeholders for a conference call Wednesday, March 2 at 3 p.m. to discuss advancing the Let’s Move! initiative goal of doubling the number of schools participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s HealthierUS School Challenge Program. Invited listeners include members of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), National School Boards Association (NSBA), National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS), National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the School Nutrition Association (SNA), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), the National Association for Educating Young Children (NAEYC), and the Association for School Business Officials International (ASBO). The purpose of the call is to further engage education stakeholders in the challenge by providing guidance on promoting participation.
The HealthierUS School Challenge, organized by the Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), is a voluntary program to reward schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthy school environments by promoting excellent nutrition and physical activity. As part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, the challenge aims to improve the quality of food served in schools, provide students with nutrition education, physical education and opportunities for physical activity.
