U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA) will celebrate the second national GEAR UP Day at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29 during a visit to Friendship Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.
After an introduction by a Friendship student, Duncan will give brief remarks recognizing Rep. Fattah for his role in passing the GEAR UP legislation and thank participating GEAR UP program directors from Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas who will give presentations on their respective programs. Duncan and Fattah's visit to Friendship is one of several national GEAR UP Day celebrations happening across the country.
GEAR UP, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a discretionary grant program that provides funding to increase access and completion in postsecondary schools and college enrollment for low-income students. Programs such as GEAR UP play a crucial role in achieving President Obama's national 2020 goal of once again leading the world in college graduates.
