Event Date 1: July 23, 2010

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will join Sen. Tom Carper and Rep. Mike Castle at the Delaware State Fair today in Harrington, Del. Before participating in fun Fair activities, the three will meet with Future Farmer of America students who will demonstrate how to show an animal, tour a student agricultural projects exhibit by 4-H, a youth organization administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and present awards to student winners of the Health Foods Contest.

The Delaware State Fair attracts more than 300,000 attendees annually and maintains its roots in agriculture. The fair started in the 1920s with an aim to promote and encourage agriculture and support the needs of residents in the state’s rural communities.

Secretary Duncan’s visit is part of the Administration’s continued efforts to engage rural communities in a conversation about how towns, states, and the federal government can work together to help strengthen rural America. Last year President Obama asked cabinet members to visit communities across the nation. Since then, senior officials have visited dozens of communities and engaged thousands of people across the country.
