Jim Bradshaw or David Thomas, (202) 401-1576,

Event Date 1: September 09, 2010

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will announce that more than 300 schools have been selected as 2010 Blue Ribbon Schools Thursday, Sept. 9, at 10:00 a.m., at the School Without Walls Senior High School in Washington, D.C. Duncan will be joined by Mayor Adrian Fenty, Public Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, George Washington University Provost Steven Lerman, and representatives from the School Without Walls.

Following the announcement and press conference, Duncan will take part in a college and career forum with students from the school’s Advanced Placement and Early College Enrollment programs.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes and honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement, especially among disadvantaged and minority students.

School Without Walls Senior High School earned Blue Ribbon School recognition because it is a high performing school where all students achieve at high levels. The school offers a rigorous college preparatory and early college program to a diverse student population. Its partnership with George Washington University has resulted in opportunities for juniors and seniors to take college courses while earning a high school diploma. With an enriched curriculum and focus on academic rigor, 100 percent of its graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities and receive $3-6 million a year in total scholarships and awards.
