U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Assistant Secretary for the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education Thelma Melendez, Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Innovation and Improvement Jim Shelton, and Senior Advisor for Early Learning Jacqueline Jones will participate in the inaugural gathering of the Funders Network – Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Feb. 27-March 1 in Washington, D.C. Duncan and senior staff will give keynote remarks and make presentations around the campaign’s theme, achieving grade-level reading proficiency for all children by the end of third grade.

The campaign, sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is a collaborative effort by dozens of funders across the nation to close the gap in reading achievement that separates many low-income students from their peers; raise the bar for reading proficiency so that all students are assessed by world-class standards; and ensure that all children have an equitable opportunity to meet those higher standards. Representatives from more than 50 donor foundations and donors along with two dozen sector-leading organization partners, such as United Way Worldwide, America’s Promise Alliance, Mission: Readiness, Technet, and the National Civic League are scheduled to participate.
