Deputy Secretary Marten and Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Lhamon to Join U.S. Postal Service to Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Title IX with Release of Four New Forever Stamps

This week, Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten and Assistant Secretary of the Office for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon will kick off a season of commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Title IX by speaking Thursday at the U.S. Postal Service’s First Day of Issue event to unveil four new Title IX-inspired stamps. The stamps feature four female athletes: a runner, a swimmer, a gymnast, and a soccer player.

In addition to the main program, the event will feature various pre-recorded messages, including one from tennis-icon and champion of equity, Billie Jean King.

Title IX was signed into law in 1972, making 2022 the 50th Anniversary of the historic measure. In the 50 years since its passage, Title IX has assured important equality gains at elementary, secondary, and postsecondary institutions. The Department’s Office for Civil Rights enforces Title IX to protect sex equality in schools for all persons. This year, the Department of Education will host and participate in a series of events with various partners to honor this milestone.
