Department of Education Assistant Secretary to Conduct Listening Session on Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act at Henry Ford Community College
Event Date 1: March 10, 2011 10:00 am - 02:30 pm
U.S. Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education Dr. Brenda Dann-Messier will conduct a listening session at Henry Ford Community College Thursday, March 10 in Dearborn, Mich. Dr. Dann-Messier will host a two-hour meeting to solicit feedback from partners and constituents on the role of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act (Perkins IV) in ensuring that all students are ready for college or a career. After the meeting, Dann-Messier will host a business roundtable with industry representatives who partner with educational programs. Later in the afternoon, she will tour the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit and meet with hospital and education officials who partner with Henry Ford Early College, located on the campus of the community college.
Henry Ford Early College provides opportunities for students interested in health care careers to earn a high school diploma and an associate degree while completing clinicals at the local hospital. Dann-Messier’s visit to Henry Ford Early College is part of a series of stops on a nation-wide “Career and Technical (CTE) Community Conversation” listening tour. Career-technical programs are increasingly viewed as having a dual mission – to prepare students for both work and further study. Thursday’s meeting will provide Dann-Messier the opportunity to engage with participants about common challenges, gain in-depth skills and learn about practices that are helping students achieve success in both advanced degrees and career.
