Russlynn Ali, assistant secretary for the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education, will participate in Martin Luther King Day events Monday in Philadelphia.

At 9:45 a.m., Assistant Secretary Ali will deliver opening remarks at a panel discussion at Girard College Lower School sponsored by NewCORE, a "multi-racial, interfaith body of many striving to become one through a new conversation on race and ethnicity." Local leaders, citizens and students are expected.

At 11:30 a.m., Ali will join the Martin Luther King 29th Annual Awards Luncheon and National Bell Ringing Ceremony. Mrs. Coretta Scott King's vision was to have the Martin Luther King holiday commence each year at noon with the ringing of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia -- a worldwide symbol of freedom, justice, and equality. Assistant Secretary Ali will assist in a symbolic ringing of the bell, as well as speak at the luncheon honoring people and organizations whose deeds are living legacies of the ideas fostered by Dr. King.
