Civil Rights Assistant Secretary to Discuss Equity, Diversity at Arlington, Va., Conference

Russlynn Ali, assistant secretary for the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Education, will address the Equity and Diversity Summit hosted by the Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center at Edvantia (ARCC) at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Hyatt Arlington Hotel in Arlington, Va. Ali will discuss OCR's vision for equity and diversity in schools, providing statistics on disproportionality and stressing why equal access is vital to promoting excellence in education.

Carl Harris, deputy assistant secretary for the department's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), also will address the summit later that morning at 9:20 a.m. He will discuss how OESE’s resources are aligned to the department's vision for equity, and the importance of states getting these resources and services to districts and schools.

More than 50 state and regional education officials are expected at the conference, including representatives from the states served by the ARCC -- Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
