Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlynn Ali will address the Bay Area Stop Bullying Summit Friday at the Presidio in San Francisco. She will appear along with U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Thomas E. Perez and California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom addressing the topic, “Creating a healthy, safe and inclusive school climate for all students -- The role of the federal government.”
The summit, sponsored by U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, in partnership with San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and San Francisco Superintendent of Schools Richard A. Carranza, is intended to bring together local, state and federal leaders in law enforcement and education, foundation and community leaders, social media experts, senior policy advisors and decision-makers in a dynamic conversation to share best practices and learn from one another.
As assistant secretary, Ali heads the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights, a position she has held since 2009. OCR works to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence throughout the nation through vigorous enforcement of civil rights.
