U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will visit three high schools in Miami, Fla., on Friday, Nov. 12, to meet with students and school leaders. Each high school received a School Improvement Grant (SIG) and is undergoing school turnaround.

Florida received a $170.2 million grant to turn around its persistently lowest achieving schools. The funds were distributed by formula to the state and then competed out by the state to school districts. In order for a school district to apply for these funds, it must have had a state-identified "persistently lowest achieving" or a Tier III school—a school that has failed to meet adequate yearly progress for two years and is not identified as a persistently lowest achieving school. However, Tier III schools can only receive funds once all of the state's persistently lowest achieving schools have received funds. For additional information on the SIG program, visit http://www2.ed.gov/programs/sif/index.html.
