PHILADELPHIA—U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will give remarks at the High School Equivalency Program/College Assistance Migrant Program 2010 National Conference at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in Philadelphia. She will discuss the educational priorities of the Administration, reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and its impact on migrant students, as well as the Department’s commitment to improving educational opportunities and resources for these students.

The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) have existed since 1967 and 1972, respectively. Both programs serve students of migrant or seasonal farm worker families. HEP helps students who have dropped out of high school get their GED, and CAMP assists students in their first year of college with academic, personal and financial support.

Today in Philadelphia, Assistant Secretary Meléndez de Santa Ana will speak at two other migrant events, both of which are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. She will address the Department’s Office of Migrant Education’s 2010 national conference. She will underscore the theme of the gathering, “Success through Service,” and discuss her vision of success in serving migrant children through collaboration and sharing of best practices. Later this afternoon, she will deliver opening remarks at the 2010 Binational Migrant Education Forum, where she will discuss the partnership between the United States and Mexico in providing an excellent education for all migrant children.
