Assistant Secretary to Discuss Equity and Excellence in Education for English Language Learners at TESOL Annual Conference in New Orleans

Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), will keynote the opening plenary at the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) 45th annual conference at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Drawing on her personal experiences as an English learner and bilingual educator, Dr. Meléndez de Santa Ana will discuss the importance of equity and excellence in education for all students, including English learners. In addition, she will highlight the Department’s “Blueprint for Reform: Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)” and its commitment to improving educational opportunities and resources for all students, including English learners.
TESOL’s mission is to develop and maintain professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages worldwide. Its four-day conference, taking place March 16-19, will feature more than 1,200 lecture/discussion sessions given by 3,000 speakers representing more than 25 different countries. Among the variety of topics are language testing and assessment, technology in language learning, bilingual education, education standards and refugee/immigration concerns.
