Event Date 1: May 23, 2013 09:30 am - 11:30 am

U.S. Assistant Secretary of Vocational and Adult Education Brenda Dann-Messier will visit the Academy for Allied Health Sciences in Scotch Plains, N.J., on Thursday, May 23, to spotlight the school district’s transformative efforts to promote educational excellence for its students and meet their diverse needs and interests. Dann-Messier will tour the school, have a discussion with several current students about their education, and participate in a roundtable discussion with teachers, counselors, parents, and representatives of the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey.

The Academy for Allied Health Sciences, one of five schools in Union County Vocational-Technical School District (UCVTS), attracts students interested in careers in the health fields. Other UCVTS schools are geared for students interested in careers in information technology and business; performing arts; science, mathematics, and technology; and technical training. By creating strong linkages between what students learn in the classroom and what they will need to know for college and career, UCVTS schools are incorporating some of the core elements that the Education Department is calling for as part of its high school redesign initiative.

Previewed in President Obama's State of the Union address, the high school redesign program is an administration proposal which would fund competitive grants to districts partnering with postsecondary institutions, businesses and non-profits to help ensure that all students graduate from high school with college credits and career- related experience.
