Assistant Deputy Secretary Kevin Jennings to Keynote Annual Summit on Substance Abuse, Mental Health and School Safety/Violence

Kevin Jennings, assistant deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools, will keynote the sixth annual summit on “Substance Abuse, Mental Health and School Safety/Violence: Best Practices for Working With Youth” on Monday, March 7, in Pine Mountain, Ga. He will discuss the importance of collaboration among federal and state agencies, recovery and creating safe, supportive school environments. Jennings also will discuss the Department’s efforts over the past year to help create safe, supportive learning environments through its Safe and Supportive School grants program. Last year, the Department awarded $38.8 million in Safe and Supportive School grants to 11 states.

The summit is sponsored by the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse whose mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse throughout Georgia communities. The council promotes quality addiction prevention and treatment practices, and supports public policy that not only reduces the stigma associated with addiction, but also supports the development and implementation of a strong prevention, treatment and recovery services system.
