The Helping Your Child publication series focuses on providing parents with the tools and information necessary to help their children succeed in school and in life.
The Achiever is a biweekly electronic newsletter published by the U.S. Department of Education that contains news and articles on education reform, tips for parents and teachers, and resources related to No Child Left Behind.
Walt Disney Elementary is a K-5 school located in a suburban community north of Los Angeles in the city of Burbank. Disney has a total enrollment of 442 students with 75.8% or 335 of these students representing various cultures. Fourteen different languages are represented in the total school population. Disney was recognized by the Governor of California for exceptional growth in its API (Academic Performance Index) improving from 603 to 776 in two years. It is also a recipient of the Governor's Reading Award for 2000 and 2001.
The Pulliam Group provides Educational Consulting Services in a number of specific areas to meet the needs of schools and school districts in the state of California and nationwide. The Pulliam Group planning process engages school staff, parents, students, and community members in data analysis, promotes the study and review of successful educational practices, and facilitates the development of focused academic improvement strategies.
The Franklin Special School District
Franklin is located just 14 miles south of Nashville, Tennessee. The Franklin Special School District offers K-8 instruction. The curriculum of the Franklin Special School District is the result of continuous evaluation and revision based on research and experience. Students in all grade levels receive instruction in areas appropriate to their level of development. Reading is targeted at all grade levels, but particularly in the early years.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools
Anne Arundel County is located on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The 5th largest school district in Maryland, Anne Arundel schools are committed to achieving ambitious and specific goals under the leadership of School Superintendent Eric Smith. These goals include: accelerating achievement for all students and minimizing the achievement disparities among all groups of students; creating a safe learning environment that promotes accelerated achievement; and establishing community partnerships to promote accelerated achievement in a welcoming school environment.
Project A.G.A.P.E.
Project A.G.A.P.E. (ACADEMICALLY GROWING AND PROMOTING EXCELLENCE) concentrates on improving the competence of males & females between the ages of 6 and 17 by providing them with tutorial assistance in math, reading and writing. Project A.G.A.P.E. also focuses on computer training, counseling on health issues and improving self-esteem.
The Office of Innovation and Improvement
The Office of Innovation and Improvement is a nimble, entrepreneurial arm of the U.S. Department of Education. It makes strategic investments in promising educational practices through grants to states, schools, and community organizations. It also leads the movement for greater parental options and information in education.
The What Works Clearinghouse was established by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to provide educators, policymakers, and the public with a central, independent, and trusted source of scientific evidence of what works in education. Through a set of easily accessible web-based databases, the WWC will provide decision makers with the information they need to make choices based on high-quality scientific research.

Nina Rees
Nina S. Rees is the Deputy Under Secretary for the US. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement. In this capacity, Ms. Rees serves as the principal adviser to the Secretary of Education on all matters related to parental options and choice. Prior to her appointment, Ms Rees served as a former aide to Vice President Cheney and was the former Chief Education Analyst for The Heritage Foundation. A frequent media commentator on education issues, Ms. Rees articles and views has appeared in many national newspapers and magazines.
Eric Smith
Eric Smith is the Superintendent of Schools for Anne Arundel County, Maryland. In his first six months as Anne Arundel's superintendent, Dr. Smith established three major goals for the school system to achieve by 2007: 1) accelerate academic achievement of all students; 2) create a safe learning environment that promotes accelerated achievement, and 3) promote community partnerships that support academics. Most recently, Dr. Smith received the 2002 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education, which is awarded to educators whose innovations and leadership have raised the bar for the field of education. In 2001, Dr. Smith was named the country's top urban educator by the Council of the Great City Schools.
Linda Reksten
Dr. Linda Reksten is the former principal of Walt Disney Elementary School in Burbank, California and is currently employed by the Pulliam Group, a Redlands-based educational consulting service. Dr. Reksten was recently honored at a White House ceremony where the President called her an "education hero" for her role in reversing student performance at Disney. In conjunction with the Pulliam Group, Dr. Reksten recently released a book titled "The Accountable World of Education: The Dramatic Turnaround of Disney Elementary from Low-Achieving to High Performing," detailing her journey of reform at the school.
Jacqueline Simmons
Jacqueline Simmons is a parent leader at Disney Elementary School where her three children are currently enrolled. Beyond her full-time responsibilities in the home, Jacqueline serves on Disney's School Site Council and as a Campus Supervisor. In these roles, Jacqueline directly supports the learning environment through her mentorship, tutoring and student safety responsibilities.
John Schroer
John Schroer is the President of Southland Management Company and the Chairman of the Franklin Special School District School Board in Franklin, Tennessee. An ardent supporter of the parent information provisions in N o Child Left Behind, Mr. Schroer has worked to educate parents and the Franklin community on their rights and responsibilities under the law. In July 2002, Mr. Schroer was appointed to the Tennessee School Boards Association Board of Directors.
