Researching and Disseminating What Works

When promising practices are identified, they need to be disseminated to others who want to improve. We must continue to research and disseminate best practices in teacher recruitment, preparation, licensing, and on-going support.

• The Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy

A consortium of universities created to investigate the relationship between excellent teaching and policymaking at national, state, and local levels.

• National Partnership for Excellence and Accountability in Teaching

National organizations and researchers from several universities working together to build consensus around two broad issues: enhancing teachers' opportunities to learn throughout their careers, and creating school conditions that support excellence in teaching.

• National Awards Program for Model Professional Development

An awards program intended to recognize public and private (pre-K-12) schools and school districts that engage their staffs in high-quality professional development that exemplifies the Department's ten Principles of Professional Development and results in increased teacher effectiveness and student achievement. The Department has profiled schools and districts that have won this prestigious award for 1998-99, 1997-98 and 1996-97. • Improving America's Schools Conference Professional Development Institute

One-day institute featured at all of the Department's Improving America's Schools Conferences that will focus on the continuum of teacher development.

• Promising Practices: New Ways to Improve Teacher Quality

Examples of what's working across the nation in teacher recruitment, preparation, licensing, induction, professional development, and rewarding good teaching.
