"High Standards at Work:
Comprehensive Approaches to School Improvement"

Tuesday, March 16, 1999 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. (MT), 8:00-9:00 p.m. (ET)
(Live from Denver, Colorado)

Real school improvement can't be piecemeal. Research tells us that the best way to improve a school is with a comprehensive approach ensuring that every element of the school focuses on raising student achievement and improving teaching and learning. Such an approach aligns all of a school's resources - human, financial, and technological - and integrates core academic subject areas, professional development for teachers, school organization, and parent involvement to achieving high standards.

In a special broadcast, live from Denver, Colorado, the March Satellite Town Meeting will focus on schools and communities that are using research-based designs for school-wide change that work to raise student achievement. The program will examine comprehensive improvement programs that emphasize getting high standards into the classroom, mastering the basics, quality teaching and leadership, and parental involvement.

Secretary Riley and his guests will discuss such questions as:

  • What is a "comprehensive school reform approach"? How does it help achieve success and high standards?
  • How do schools and school districts determine which school improvement approach is right for them?
  • How can schools align all their resources to improve student achievement?
  • What help is available to schools that want to undertake comprehensive school reform?
  • How can research-based models help schools improve teaching and learning for low- achieving student?
  • In what ways can parents and the community encourage high standards and support comprehensive reform?

The March Town Meeting Guests are:

  • Dr. Steven M. Ross, Professor and Senior Researcher, University of Memphis, Center for Research in Educational Policy, Memphis, Tennessee

  • Ms. Deborah Guardia, Principal, Esther Perez Carvajal Elementary School, San Antonio, Texas
