Like the innovative schools and community programs that we feature, the Satellite Town Meeting accomplishes its goals via partnerships. We work with a variety of national organizations to bring the Satellite Town Meeting to our audience each month.
Major Partners: The Department of Education works with two national business organizations to produce the Satellite Town Meeting.
- The National Alliance of Business provides advice on program content, conducts outreach (especially to the NAB members and other parts of the business community), assists with fundraising.
- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Center for Workforce Preparation provides suggestions for program content, helps the Department raise outside funds for the program, provides the site and broadcast facility for the program; and conducts outreach to member Chambers throughout the country.
Funding Partners: About 2 of every 3 dollars spent on the production of the Satellite Town Meeting come from sources outside the Department. At present the list of funding partners (sponsors) includes the Bayer Foundation; the Procter and Gamble Foundation; and Target Stores.
Broadcast Partners: National television networks help to broadcast or rebroadcast the Satellite Town Meeting:
- Discovery Communications rebroadcasts the Satellite Town Meeting on The Learning Channel (TLC) (in more than 70 million cable homes).
- Apple Computer's Apple Learning Interchange offers a live webcast (at http://ali.apple.com/) of the Satellite Town Meeting each month. Apple Learning Interchange also archives the program, allowing people to watch the program later, and runs online discussion about the Satellite Town Meeting's topics.
- Channel One Connection feeds the taped Satellite Town Meeting to 12,000 schools (home to 550,000 educators) each month as part of its "Classroom Channel" feature. The network also has an Internet site for teachers which offers daily lesson plans, teacher forums and Internet resources.
- The American Association of Community Colleges and the Allliance for Community Media encourage their members with television facilities to broadcast the Satellite Town Meeting.
- The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) makes the Satellite Town Meeting available on its satellite to its member stations around the country. Individual PBS members tape the Satellite Town Meeting, broadcast on their affiliated cable or ITFS stations, distribute tapes to local educational institutions, etc. PBS also tapes the program for use by member stations and features the Satellite Town Meeting in various program guides.
