"Learning Together: Diverse Schools Building One America"
Tuesday, January 19, 1999 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. (ET)
Every year, America becomes more racially and ethnically diverse. Our nation already has five school districts with students from over 100 different racial and ethnic groups, and next year, there will be 12 such school districts. Researchers say that within 50 years there will be no single racial or ethnic group that will be in a majority in the United States. The challenges and opportunities posed by the increasing diversity of the nation's student population will be the focus of the January Satellite Town Meeting. School and community leaders will share their advice and experiences about making diversity a strength. In a taped segment, Secretary Riley will talk with high school students about how race and diversity impacts their learning and lives. Judith Winston, executive director of the President's Initiative on Race and General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Education, will welcome a panel of school and community leaders who are successfully meeting of the challenge of racial and cultural diversity. Questions to be discussed include:
- In what ways is diversity an asset for the school community?
- How should teachers be prepared to teach in a diverse classroom? What can we do to recruit a more diverse teacher corps?
- In what ways can the school serve as a leader in the community on issues of race and diversity?
- How can community leaders reach out to schools to help students bridge differences?
- How can principals and teachers encourage family involvement in a diverse school community, including reaching students and parents who are limited-English proficient?
- What are the findings from the President's Initiative on Race and how can they help schools?
