"Going to College: Financial Aid Night"
Tuesday, November 17, 1998
8:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. (ET)

Attending college has always been part of the American dream. In recent years, as tuition costs have increased dramatically, many hard-working students and families have begun to feel that college is beyond their means. As we approach the 21st century, the high-skill, high-wage jobs of the future will require students to receive at least some postsecondary education, if not an advanced degree.

The good news for all students who dream of pursuing higher education, is that college IS within reach. New changes in the Federal programs for student aid -- including loans, grants, and tax incentives -- have meant that virtually anyone who wants to attend college can now afford the tuition. Likewise many states, local governments, community coalitions, and higher education institutions themselves are finding new ways to make college possible and affordable.

In the November Satellite Town Meeting, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley will present a program of the latest information on federal student aid and other forms of assistance, and will offer a panel to answer your questions. The program will include:

  • An overview of the major student financial assistance programs that are available at most schools, including: Federal Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, PLUS Grants (FSEOG), Federal Work Study (FWS), and Federal Perkins Loan;
  • Information on the most recent changes to the tax law, from tax cuts to savings incentives, that benefit students and their families;
  • Assistance for minority students; and,
  • Ideas for obtaining scholarships from companies, community organizations, and other sources.

Call in or e-mail us during the broadcast with ANY financial aid questions. Spanish translators will be available. ~~ The program will be simulcast in Spanish.
