"Modernizing Schools:
Updating Technology, Buildings & Classrooms"
Tuesday, October 20, 1998
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (ET)
With the right computers, technology, and access, students can now go to Mars with the Explorer space probe, take a virtual visit the Louvre, and chat with scientists in the rain forest. But many schools across the country are crumbling, with wiring too old to support Internet access and telecommunications needs, and, in many crowded classrooms, students can't get enough time on the computers.
We know that in order for students to learn and compete in the global economy, schools must be well-equipped with technology, and they must be able to accommodate smaller class sizes. And, to make technology a viable instructional tool requires schools to have enough computers to provide full, easy access for all students, including students with disabilities. The October Town Meeting will focus on how schools and communities are working together to modernize schools for the 21st century. The program will look at communities in rural, suburban, and urban areas, where schools are being built and renovated to accommodate new, accessible technology and smaller class sizes.
U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley will present a discussion on issues such as:
- What do we want schools of the 21st century to look like? How can we modernize the schools for the future? What roles should technology play?
- In what ways can technology be integrated in teaching and learning in order to improve student achievement?
- How can thoughtfully designed facilities and resources, including technology, work to connect students to the community and the real world?
- How can parents and business and community leaders help visualize the ways that schools need to be modernized?
