"Back to School -- Safe & Sound"
Tuesday, September 15, 1998
8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (ET)
As summer vacation ends and U.S students go back to school, the top priority is to assure that schools are safe and orderly places. Teachers can't teach if they have to compete for respect or fear for their safety. Students can't learn if there is disorder in the classroom. Schools across the country are starting this year with clear, strict standards for behavior. In addition, parents, business leaders, priests and ministers, police officers, community members and others are building partnerships to reconnect with children and make sure all schools are safe and sound.
The September Satellite Town Meeting will focus on ways that community partnerships can keep schools and society safe for all young people, including keeping students in school, after school programs, and mentoring and tutoring efforts.
U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and his guests will address these issues:
- How can communities and schools work together to keep students safe and reconnect them to families, churches and other positive influences?
- In what ways can local police officers, community organizations and businesses work to keep students in school and off the streets, especially after school?
- How can all adults in the community reach out to children one-on-one in tutoring and mentoring programs to enhance learning and provide a sense of trust, guidance and security?
- In what ways can communities support and reinforce their local schools safety policies and codes of behavior.
To participate, all you need is to locate a facility with satellite downlink capabilities. Or, call your local cable access station or school board channel and give them the satellite coordinates:
