FINANCIAL AID NIGHT

HOSTED BY U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION RICHARD W. RILEY
Monday, November 10th, 1997 8:00 - 8:45 p.m. Eastern Time

Education after high school is more important--and more expensive-- than ever. Students, their families, and school administrators need to learn about as many sources of financial aid as possible. That's why the U.S. Department of Education is hosting a special teleconference on federal student financial assistance.

On Monday, November 10th at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley and top experts in financial aid will present the latest information on federal student aid and answer your questions. The program will include:

  • How to obtain and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the document that determines eligibility for about 70 percent of Federal student financial assistance;

  • An overview of the major student financial assistance programs that are available at most schools, including: Federal Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, PLUS Loan, Consolidation Loans, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOGs), Federal Work-Study (FWS), and Federal Perkins Loans;

  • Information on the most recent changes to the tax law, from tax cuts to savings incentives, that benefit students and their families;

  • How the AmeriCorps program provides full-time educational awards in return for work in community service; and,

  • Ideas for obtaining scholarships from companies, community organizations, and other sources.

Join this special event! High schools, school districts, community colleges, and universities often have the capability to downlink satellite events. Just gather together a group of students, families, counselors, financial aid administrators, organizations that offer scholarships, and other interested people from your community. The Secretary will take phone calls and answer questions sent in via fax, during the program. Questions should be faxed by 5 p.m., Friday, November 7th to (202) 401-0689. Organize your own discussion before or after the teleconference to answer everybody's questions.

The teleconference is free, but please register your participation.
