Stephen Hammerman is vice chairman of the board of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc., and is a member of the firm's executive committee. Active in philanthropic, educational and community affairs, Hammerman serves on the boards of the National Organization for Disability and the National Center on Disability Services, where he works to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equal access to employment opportunities. At Merrill Lynch he supports the company's aggressive efforts to hire individuals with disabilities. Mr. Hammerman's engagement in disability issues and with the disability community has family roots, as one of his granddaughters has Cerebral Palsy. His wife Elly is one of the founders of the Initiative for Women with Disabilities at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, which is part of Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Hammerman brings to the Commission substantial business and managerial experience, including service as a director of the New York Stock Exchange, chairman of the board of governors of the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), and director of the Securities Investors Protection Corporation. Hammerman also has experience working in the federal government as the New York Regional Administrator for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division for the Southern District of New York. A native of New York, he is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and received his law degree from New York University. He and his wife have four married children and 13 grandchildren.
