A r c h i v e d I n f o r m a t i o nEducation Under Secretary Hickok Visited Raleigh, N.C., as Part of Back to School, Moving Forward Tour On August 28, 2001, U.S. Under Secretary of Education Gene Hickok visited Jeffrey's Grove Elementary School in Raleigh, North Carolina, as part of the Education Department's cross-country Back to School, Moving Forward tour promoting accountability for schools through family, school and community activity. Under Secretary Hickok toured classrooms, read to students, and talked to parents, teachers and community leaders about the four principles of President Bush's education reform plan, No Child Left Behind: accountability for results, local control and flexibility, expanded parental choice and using instructional methods that have been proven to work. In addition, Under Secretary Hickok spoke at Meredith College during a luncheon with members of the business and education communities to discuss how they can help make sure no child is left behind in any school system. To round out his visit to North Carolina, Under Secretary Hickok also met with college students, selected as North Carolina Teaching Fellows, who are currently enrolled in teacher preparation programs across the region. Beginning in 1986, the teaching fellows program provides a $6,500 per year scholarship for four years to high school seniors in North Carolina.
