Education Secretary Paige Visits Nashville as Part of National Back to School, Moving Forward Tour

On August 29, 2001, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, as part of his cross-country Back to School, Moving Forward tour promoting accountability for schools through family, school and community activity.

In the morning, Secretary Paige visited Peabody College, a leading graduate school within Vanderbilt University specializing in education and human development. Organized in 1785, Peabody College remains one of the top colleges dedicated to improving education through research and quality teacher training.

He also toured Ross Elementary School and met with students, parents, teachers and community leaders about the four principles of President Bush's education reform plan No Child Left Behind: accountability for results, local control and flexibility, expanded parental choice and using instructional methods that have been proven to work.

In the afternoon, Secretary Paige spoke at a luncheon with representatives from Tennessee Tomorrow, an organization including leaders from the private, public, and academic sector that work to improve Tennessee's economic development and overall quality of life. Secretary Paige talked about how business and civic leaders can help improve our school system and make sure no child is left behind.
