Education Secretary Paige Visited Kansas City as Part of National Back to School, Moving Forward Tour

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige was in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 30 as part of his cross-country Back to School, Moving Forward tour promoting accountability for schools through family, school and community activity.

In the morning, Secretary Paige visited Della Lamb Elementary Charter School, the first charter school to open in the state of Missouri. Secretary Paige met with students, parents, teachers and community leaders about President Bush's education reform plan, No Child Left Behind, which is based on four principles: accountability for results, local control and flexibility, expanded parental choice and doing what works.

He then welcomed students back to school at St. Francis Xavier School, one of seven Central City Schools supported in part by the Central City School Fund, a partnership program of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, which provides educational support to economically disadvantaged children.

During lunch, Secretary Paige was a speaker at a luncheon hosted by the Children's Scholarship Fund of Kansas City. The Children's Scholarship Fund provides partial scholarships for children in low-income families to attend the schools of their choice.
