Local Head Start and Early Head Start Programs,
Parent and Child Centers and the Head Start
Training and Technical Assistance Network
The Head Start program is administered by the Administration for Children and Families, Department of Health and Human Services.
Grants are awarded by the ten Health and Human Services Regional Offices and by the Head Start Bureanu's American Indian Program and Migrant Program Branches to local public and private nonprofit organizations and agencies for the purpose of operating Head Start programs at the community level. Approximately 1440 grants have been awareded to local groups who, each year, enroll an estimated 752,077 children from birth to age five. The programs serve both rural and urban areas in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Pacific Insular Areas, and the Trust Territories. Head Start also funds 143 Early Head Start projects to provide early, comprehensive child development and family support services to low income families with children under age three. Included in the Early Head Start effort are the Parent and Child Centers and the Comprehensive Child Development Demonstration Project.
How to Use This Directory
- Head Start programs and the Head Start Director's phone number are listed alphabetically by city location within states. Grantee and Delegate agency names are included in areas where the grantee has elected to delegate (sub-contract) the actual operation of the Head Start program to a separate community organization. After the phone numbers are different letters indicating the type of program or programs operated. Delegate agencies are identified by (D), grantees by (G), Early Head Start Programs by (E), and Head Start Parent ahd Child Centers by (PC). The Migrant (M) and American Indian (I) Head Start programs are now listed in the state sections as well.
- An asterisk (*) indicates that all or part of a program's services are provided through the home-based option.
