How to Find FWS Tutors for Your Elementary School, Preschool, Community Center, Family Literacy or After-School Program
Federal Work-Study is a financial aid program that provides up to 100 percent of the wages for college and university students who tutor in reading or in math. Students may tutor at your preschool or elementary school, your community center, or in your family literacy or after school program.
Why Form a Partnership with a Higher Education Institution?
- America Reads*America Counts is an excellent way for a higher education institution to serve community needs.
- As of July 1, 2000, all institutions that receive Federal Work-Study funding are required to spend 7 percent of their funding on community service. Tutoring is included in this 7 percent.
- As of July 1, 2000, every institution that receives Federal Work-Study funding is required to have a literacy-tutoring program.
How to Form a Partnership with a Higher Education Institution?
- Contact the appropriate person at the institution. For example:
- Financial Aid Officer
- Provost
- Service Learning Officer
- Community Service Officer
- Dean of the School of Education
- A friend who is an administrator
- or phone the financial aid officer to find the contact person for the program.
- Inform the contact person about your need for reading and/or math tutors and discuss the benefits of tutoring. America Reads helps children learn to read and America Counts helps children master the fundamentals of mathematics.
