Welcome from the Director
Dear Friend, Welcome to the America Reads Challenge home page, the place where you'll learn all about President Clinton's initiative to ensure that every child reads well and independently by the end of third grade. It is my sincere hope that you're visiting our site because you have a genuine interest in becoming actively involved in helping create a nation of readers. In the simplest of terms, the America Reads Challenge asks every citizen to identify some activity on a personal and/or professional level that will help a child become an accomplished reader. As you review information on this site, you'll notice there are many opportunities to become involved. If you are a parent, you already know the importance of your role as a child's first and most important teacher so you might want to access information that can help you prepare your child for reading and help your K-6 grade age child improve reading skills by visiting the Publications page. Community organization as well as schools and employers will want to find out how they can support the America Reads Challenge by joining The President's Coalition for the America Reads Challenge. Colleges and universities will want to find out how they can provide students with the opportunity to work as a tutor in a pre- or elementary school as part of the Federal Work-Study program. You'll also find research information and resources that you may find useful. And remember, all of our publications and information are in the public domain and may be used freely and without need for further permission. Again, welcome to the America Reads Challenge site. I hope you enjoy learning about the initiative and are inspired to help a child in your community become a good and independent reader. Sincerely, Carol Hampton Rasco HOW TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE AMERICA READS CHALLENGE
