Casper College is collaborating with Natrona County School District #1 Elementary Reading Specialists, as well as various pre-school and after-school care programs in the Casper community. Currently tutors are working in four elementary schools with grades K-6. However, any work with 4th-6th graders occurs in relation to individual or group special reading programs for students not reading at grade level. The K through 3rd grade reading tutors are primarily working in one-to-one lesson situations, although some group work is led by two tutors.
Additionally, tutors are working in two pre-school centers with 2 to 6 year-olds to establish pre-reading and primary reading skills through a variety of activities geared to the developmental needs of the children. One after-school care program is being served and combines the reading skills development with a swimming development program.
The tutors, who are majoring in elementary education (5 tutors), occupational therapy, pre-law, psychology, and early childhood education, have been recruited through the college's Career Information and Placement Center. After the decision was made to have Casper College participate in the America Reads Program, the Career Information and Placement Center and the Student Financial Assistance Office collaborated to educate and solicit job descriptions from the aforementioned entities within the City of Casper. Once the job descriptions were received, the Career Information and Placement Center worked with various "high probability" academic major areas to promote, recruit, and orient the student tutors.
