We are in the process of establishing a FWS reading tutors program.

We hope to begin our FWS reading tutor program in September of 1999, and welcome
any suggestions in regards to the same.

The America Reads program at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico began on August 29, 1997. An orientation session and two workshops were offered to the participating students with the participation of the teachers from the selected schools. Involved in the program are the following schools: Julio Selles Sola, Lopez Sicardo, Las Mercedes, Isaac Gonzalez, and Roosevelt schools. The workshops were in "Motivation and Interaction to Teach and Support" and "Strategies to Develop Reading Technique." All 30 students in the program attended.

The students and teachers came out of these workshops very motivated. The teachers and counselors of the schools were very happy with the project. They believe that it will be a great help to their students. The program has received publicity through radio, TV and newspaper media of the island. We will evaluate the program on an ongoing basis, at the end of each academic period.
