Eastern's America Reads tutors currently work with the local school district during a summer literacy campaign that has been in existence for over 3 years. They work with mainly K-third grade students to help boost their reading skills for the upcoming year. The program has been very successful, and Eastern is currently developing similar programs with other school districts. Eastern, the school district and the students involved have all benefited form the experience. We are working closely with all of our school districts to meet the America Reads Challenge. Last June the FWS office sent letters to 700 students eligible for the FWS award through Financial Aid. It described the thrust behind the America Reads program and asked for a response from the students that felt that they would like to tutor in grades K-3 for the upcoming school year. We had 120 people respond. We signed potential jobs up with 7 school districts and 20 individual elementary schools.

Fall term we placed 25 students in the schools. They work in many capacities of literacy. Some work one-on-one for one half hour twice a week; some work in small groups; some work in libraries. The times that they work are generally between 8:00 am to 2:30 pm. They normally work 12 hours per week to earn all of their award. Winter term as our FWS student's schedules changed, some were not able to stay in the program, but plan on returning as their schedule allows. The work done as tutors is satisfying and rewarding to not only the children, but to our students.

We have students participating in this program from our elementary education department. They are working in local schools to help children who may be struggling with their reading skills or are not at their grade level benchmark. I think that this program is most beneficial for the children and our own students as well.

Working with Oregon's SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) VISTA coordinators, school reading specialists, and school volunteer coordinators, Portland Community College has placed 25 work-study students in 12 schools and four school districts.

After receiving training from a financial aid coordinator who is a former elementary teacher, the students work with children, mainly focusing on reading and other literacy-based activities with K-3 students.

Opportunities abound for FWSP students in the metro area. We have a well-established Community Service program with outstanding opportunities in non-profit agencies. Our contracts for America Reads are with the Portland School District (the largest in the Northwest) and with the Oregon Children's Foundation's SMART Program. All tutoring is done in local public schools. Though our numbers seem low, we are on-target for projected participation by work-study students.

The School of Education also places students in the field as tutors. And a proposal is in the works which, if adopted, would extend the America Reads Program well beyond the FWS Program.
