The College of Santa Fe is a small private liberal arts college with a strong commitment to serving the disadvantaged. The presence of the Christian Brothers serves to remind us of such a commitment. Through the Service Learning Program and the Career Placement Office, we have made a commitment to send students as volunteers to our local elementary schools as tutors, mentors and
role models. Many of our students continue to work in the local elementary school's after school programs. We serve many other non-profit agencies through this program. We also set up internships and practicum situations where students have the opportunity to provide a much needed service to various local non-profit agencies, including but not limited to local homeless shelters and
soup kitchens.

The NMSU America Reads Program is a collaborative effort between NMSU units and local school districts. The program is designed to initially place 20-25 reading tutors in existing literacy programs (such as "Success for All," "Helping One-Student at a Time," and Title I Reading) in the Las Cruces Public School and the Gadsden Independent School Districts.
Tutors will be required to have completed one of several semester courses dealing with literacy, and must undergo 1-3 days specialized reading/tutoring training provided by university faculty and/or school district staff.
The collaborative involves school district Directors of Reading Programs, the Financial Aid Department of NMSU and the Department of Curriculum & Instruction of NMSU, with possible expansion to other districts and units as the program evolves.

The America Reads Program at SFCC began in August of 1999 with the placement of a Vista Volunteer. Recuitment was accomplished through the college both on Resource Day as well as through the Service Learning Department out of which Vista operates. Flyers were also placed in the community. Fourteen tutors are currently working in two elementary schools, focusing on grades kindergarten through third. This tutoring is one on one, during school hours for one half hour per week. The volunteers received a two hour training by another Vista member who has been a teacher for a number of years. We plan to place many more volunteers into those schools open to the idea of having someone read to their students. The teachers are in desperate need and are welcoming with open arms any assistance offered for those students in need. Fun and learning are the goals.
