The University of Mississippi will use and expand existing programs to support their increased involvement and commitment to the America Reads Challenge. Twenty-five Federal Work-Study students will serve as tutors this year alongside 200 other student volunteers. The University of Mississippi will place them in programs with two local school district who operate six different reading and math tutoring programs utilizing student, faculty, and staff volunteers. This program is expanding to other area schools over the next four years to accommodate the growing number of student volunteers and Federal Work-Study students and broaden the scope of their impact.
They will also use the Volunteer Services Center to place volunteers. The University of Mississippi was able to establish a Volunteer Services Center in 1996 under the Campus Link AmeriCorps program. An advisory board of faculty, staff, students and schools personnel contribute to the continued development of this center. The five-year plan of this center involves providing additional opportunities for faculty and staff to participate in tutoring at four area schools. Currently, faculty from the School of Education are providing training support for "reading coaches" for the children benefiting from the Campus Link AmeriCorps program.
