The "Berea Reads" program was initiated as an extension of Berea College's pre-existing literacy services. Funding from the College provided literacy training for each coordinator. Tutoring took place in The Learning Loft, a large space decorated by students with constantly changing murals of trees, people, and activity. The program was coordinated by the College's major service organization, Students For Appalachia (SFA). In SFA, this same model is used to provide a wide variety of services through use of student leaders who coordinate voluntary action by students and other community members. The program provides training in effective leadership of volunteers and in teamwork.

Students and educators throughout Madison County were pleased to learn that the College's literacy efforts would be extended through the summer. Student coordinators worked with educational and community agencies to identify clients. Very little advertisement was necessary. Federal Work Study students coordinated the entire program, including the selection of students as well as the recruitment, training and scheduling of tutors. Tutors were available for students of all ages, elementary through adult. There were twenty elementary students involved in one-on-one partnerships beyond those previously served. In addition, "Berea Reds" provided story time for several sessions of the College's Summer Day Camp. These camps involved 30 elementary students per session.

The America Reads Tutor program at Maysville Community College serves seven counties in Northern KY.  This school year (1998-99) our tutors will work in eleven different schools with 1st through 3rd grade children.  At this time, all tutors are MCC students, most are federal work study
subsidized.  The tutors receive ten hours of training before beginning work and ongoing training throughout the semester.  We actively raise support from local businesses and groups for tutor training funds and supplies.  Beginning this year, the tutors may receive academic credit and we have some who participate only for credit. We also have tutors who use America Reads for their service project.

Our program is working with our Americorp resources and our Family Resource Centers (in school social service contacts) to provide literacy training at 2 local elementary schools. We are working with an afterschool tutoring program and providing in-school services. Our program has been very successful and we are looking to expand into our service region to provide our non-traditional commuter students with employment as America Reads workstudy participants.

The AmericaReads program at Prestonsburg Community College ws initiated in the fall of 1997. Students are required to enroll in EX 196-3, which is an experiential education course.  The class meets every other week for one and one-half hours.  The course work is a modified primary reading course.  Students also spend 120 hours tutoring.  They are provided with basic materials such as trade books, dry erase board, magnetic letters, notebook, crayons, glue, sentence strips and stickers.

The initial assessment of youngsters consists of an alphabet check, a sight word check and a phonemic awareness assessment.  The same assessments are used for post testing.  A reading/writing approach is stressed.

Students must have a current TB screening and a criminal background check.  School placement is done through the Title I office and the principal after the student indicates a school choice.  Student retention is difficult and only a few tutors last more than one semester due to transfer to four year institutions, course schedules, and family concerns.
