Tutors have been placed in 7 public K-4 buildings, 1 fifth grade building, 1 sixth grade building, and 2 private K-6 buildings, as well as the ESU Reading Lab, which is open to the community. An emphasis is being placed on the early elementary grades, though there is some tutoring of older elementary students. Nearly all of the tutoring is taking place during school hours, with the exception of the ESU reading lab, which is in the evenings. One elementary school may also have some after-school programs.

Recruitment of tutors produced a very large applicant pool. Nearly 60 students applied for the position. The campus job board, campus-wide flyer distribution, and heavy advertisement in the Teacher's College were the primary forms of advertisement. Applicants met for a one-night information session, at which the program was explained and applications were taken. Students were screened based on experiences, references, and an interview process in which the applicant was asked to read. Those who were not selected for this program were encouraged to become involved in other ways through cooperative education, volunteer or other programs.

The program at ESU is the result of a cooperative effort between the Teacher's College, the Office of Professional Education Services, the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, Cooperative Education, the cooperating host schools, and the Office of Student Financial Aid. All areas had significant input in the design and direction of the program. The host schools were very receptive of the program, as there has been a history of cooperation between the local schools and ESU with other programs.

Most materials were created specifically for this program, utilizing the expertise of professional educators on campus and in the schools to devise quality materials. Primary training took place in two, 4-hour block sessions. Discussions concerning progress, problems, and other topics will take place in bi-weekly staff meetings involving the tutors and program coordinators. Tutor evaluation will be a cooperative effort between the on-site supervisor and program coordinators. A bi-weekly evaluation will be performed by the on-site supervisor, and plans are in place to have an administrative on-site visit. ESU hopes to develop this program as part of a larger tutoring program which is already in existence, and perhaps work towards tying this program into a larger community outreach service. Those involved with the program at ESU are thrilled with the opportunities America Reads has afforded, and ESU is very proud to be a part of this initiative.

The K-State America Reads program has focused on eight elementary school/learning center sites in the Manhattan/Junction City/Ogden area. 19 tutors took part in tutoring students ages K-3 in reading and writing. Tutors received training from teachers/specialists in the education field and brainstormed learning activities and shared ideas at the workshops as well. They were also able to reflect on their tutoring experiences in the form of bi-weekly journals with their students. Family literacy is one aspect of America Reads that we are going to implement this fall.
