The America Reads program at Boise State University is tied to our teacher preparation program. The program is designed to tutor students in public schools, grades 1-3. Sophomore level college students are paired with schools and teachers so the tutees receive tutoring twice a week (one session from each of the two college students). Each America Reads tutor receives approximately 12 hours of training prior to their placement in the public schools. Interest from both the public schools and the tutors has been positive. We are now receiving additional requests from local libraries to expand tutoring opportunities at non school locations. We are currently working with approximately 50 students in the program.

The America Reads program at the University of Idaho is tied to the Even Start Family Literacy Program, which supports families who have children ages birth-7 and adult educational needs (ABE, GED, or ESL). We are a rural program serving five school districts within Latah County.
Our FWS students are involved in a variety of assignments. Some are involved in our home-visiting component whereby a team--a FWS student and a family literacy specialist--visits a family in their home (or alternate location). The FWS student reads and does extension activities with the child(ren) while the family literacy specialist works with the parent(s) educational need. Other tasks for our FWS students include reading an doing activities with the children in a childcare setting and teaching in an early childhood education program.
