Briarwood College is proud to be part of the America Reads Challenge. Our students are interviewed by the Director of Financial Aid and the Program Director of Child Development, as well as the Principal of the elementary school in which they are placed. They receive a copy of "The Read Write Now! Partners Tutoring Program" as a guideline on tutoring. Our students have been placed in three elementary schools in our community and work either on a one-to-one or in small groups of children. The students participating in the America Reads Challenge have received personal satisfaction and also enjoy public recognition.

Briarwood College has also initiated 'Story Time' for our community children between the ages of 4 - 10. Our students plan and implement storytelling, games, arts & crafts, and serve snacks. This event is held once a month and is very well received by our community.

Yale University, founded in 1701, includes a liberal arts college with 5,000 undergraduates and 11 graduate and professional schools with another approximately 5,000 students. It is located in the urban center of New Haven, home to 120,000 residents.

Yale provides community service work-study funding to approximately 100 students for America Reads. The two main efforts are a collaborative with Timothy Dwight Elementary School, where Yale provides one tutor for each of the 70 third-grade students. These pairs of college and elementary school students work together one-on-one to build literacy skills four times a week. Yale also provides work-study funding and other support to the New Haven Jumpstart program. Yale pays for two student coordinators who oversee program logistics. The university also funds a training coordinator who is a trained literacy teacher and provides a stipend for the elementary school's parent liaison. Yale also provides funds for training materials and supplies for college students and the elementary school.

Yale is working with the New Haven Public Schools' Office of Planning and Assessment on evaluation of the America Reads Program at Timothy Dwight Elementary School. Jumpstart conducts regular evaluations of its program in New Haven and other sites. Yale's efforts in New Haven have received multiple notices in the campus and local print media. Yale is fully supportive of the America Reads Challenge and expects to strengthen its current efforts while looking to expand the number of Yale students and New Haven children involved.
