The Community College of Denver has America Reads Federal Work Study tutors and Colorado AmeriCorps Literacy Initiative tutors. Both groups tutor in the Denver Public Schools. We have five schools, a Housing Development site and the early childhood site. The tutors are working with children in early childhood groups to third grade.

Training is an ongoing process and the group meets once a week for appoximately 2 hours. One hour focuses on a specific skill for tutoring and the other hours in based on the experiences the tutors have at their school sites.

Community College of Denver is the head institution in a consortium to create "Campus and Community Institutes" at eight Colorado higher education institutions. These Institutes engage faculty, students and staff in direct service in partnership with local schools and community-based organizations. In this Service Learning Corps program of Learn and Serve America, 136 students, most of whom receive Federal Work-Study, integrate academic study with service working in collaboration with local public schools year-round.

Summer Scholars is a non-profit literacy program serving students in Northeast Denver.  Our main program is a six-week summer literacy and recreation program.  We also place volunteers in one of our 18 participating schools during the school year.  We have a literacy pilot program at one of our participating schools during the school year which models after our summer program.  We serve ECE through 4th grade students who are reading below grade level.

The University of Denver's America Reads Program is run as a joint effort between the Office of Student Financial Services and the Community Action Program.  At the undergraduate level, approximately 25 students are employed in local elementary schools, neighborhood centers and other local non-profit agencies, primarily during after school hours.  While many of the tutors are paid out of the Federal Work-Study Program, the Community Action/Service Learning Programs also has volunteer tutors.

In addition to undergraduate tutoring program, the University of Denver College of Law employs 15-20 tutors at two Denver Public Schools through the FWS Program.  These students spend 10-20 hours/week at the schools working with students in grades K-6 on reading skills.
