Particiption: The Marshall County schools America Reads project matches volunteer tutors with children in grades K-3rd. Twelve Vista volunteers work throughout the varoius elementary schools recruiting, training, and coordinating the project. Two of the volunteers are mobilizing the community towards building school libraries within two of the elementary schools. The Vista members partner with the Foster Grandparent members in providing tutoring for the students. Read Aloud, a program whereby volunteers come into the schools to read to classrooms of children is another aspect of this volunteer project. Currently there are approximately 250 volunteers involved in the programs.
Tutoring: The AmeriCorps VISTA members fashioned a tutoring manual based on the current reading series. Vocabulary flash cards and games are used with the manual to keep the children interested. Volunteers are trained at a group meeting and individually later in the year if they start after the initial training. Word assessments are given to the children quarterly to determine the success of the tutoring.
Resources: Title 1 Parent Coordinator, Jenine Zackey, supervises the project. A Vista Leader manages the VISTA members. Some grant funding has been obtained for summer literacy activities with entering K students. Tutoring is during the school day within the school.
Research: Students, teachers, and volunteers evaluate the program. Staff meetings are held twice a month to review goals and objectives of the project.
Relations: Press releases occur on a regular basis. VISTA speak to groups and organizations locally. Some TV coverage has occurred.
