Participation: Adult and family literacy organization affiliated with Literacy Volunteers of America. As of 5-4-00, one of first affiliates in the USA to be fully accredited by LVA. Partner with NM Dept.of Health and Public Schools in Family Literacy. Serves Albuquerque and Rio Rancho - 600,000. 1 in 4 New Mexicans is functionally illiterate. Adult reading students are screened for Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (Irlen Syndrome) with great success.
Tutoring: Family Literacy Programs offered for parents at elementary schools and WIC Clinics. New program for teen parents at high school. Training for basic literacy, ESL and family literacy programs. Tutoring Program with Univ.New Mexico English Majors for adult literacy students.We teach both literate and illiteract parents how to read to their children.
Resources: We use LVA and Laubach literacy materials. Staff coordinate volunteer efforts. We write grants and participate in various fundraising efforts to support our non-profit literacy programs. We provide safe locations for tutors to meet with students.
Research: Use LVA standards to evaluate program and track progress of volunteers and students. Our newsletters and family literacy materials are available to others (limited basis) if postage is paid.
Relations: ReadWest has appeared in local and national media.Our adult reading students and their tutors have received national awards.We are members of literacy coalitions locally and at state and national levels. Initiated Albuquerque Literacy Association.
Other Comments: ReadWest believes in the importance of teaching adults to read so that they can read with their children.Children who are read to perform better in school. America needs parents AND children who value reading.
