Participation: Minnesota Campus Compact is a coalition of 45 college and university presidents that seeks to encourage student and institutional involvement in community and public service and to strengthen the impact of that service on the welfare of communities and the education of students in Minnesota. Minnesota Campus Compact is affiliated with the Campus Compact, a coalition of over 520 college and university presidents committed to community and public service.

Tutoring: We are assisting the 45 Campus Compact member campuses in Minnesota with their America Reads initiatives. This assistance is comprised of: resources (most notably a booklet entitled "The America Reads Challenge in Minnesota: Resources, Programs, and Models"), trainings (including a state-wide America Reads workshop on February 11th), VISTAs (14 VISTAs will be provided to member campuses through a grant process in order to assist them with their America Reads efforts), phone consultation, etc. One staff person at the Compact is working full-time as a resource person/coordinator for the America Reads Challenge in Minnesota.

Resources: "The America Reads Challenge in Minnesota: Resources, Programs, & Models" contains descriptions of America Reads programs in Minnesota, tutor/supervisor evaluations, a sample tutor job description, sample interview questions, models of best practice, general literacy resources, etc. It can be ordered by sending $10 (payable to "UST-Campus Compact") to Minnesota Campus Compact, Suite 25H-425, 1000 LaSalle Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55403. If you have questions, please call Catherine at (612) 962-4309

Relations: Efforts have thus far been promoted through inclusion in local newspapers as well as an article which will be included in "The Generator," a publication of the National Youth Leadership Council. There has been a great deal of attempted coalition-building for campuses and community organizations, most notably through meetings, sharing of resources, etc.

Participation: The Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) is the only statewide, nonprofit, volunteer literacy organization in Minnesota. As a leader and advocate for literacy, MLC provides a variety of cost-effective literacy-based services designed to help achieve the personal, educational, and economic goals of Minnesotans. The MLC maintains a statewide network of 120 associate partnerships that work with adult learners.

Tutoring: The Minnesota Literacy Council sponsors a very successful America Reads Summer Program in which 20 AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers tutored and provided literacy services to children in Minneapolis Public Schools, Minneapolis Public Libraries, YMCA's and Boy's and Girl's CLubs in other community locations. The VISTAs documented 16,009 contacts with children in Minneapolis. The VISTAs will work in the city of Minneapolis. They will work with children, principally in grades K-3, in neighborhoods with particular concentrations of poverty and academic need.

Research: Last summer we tracked children in 1-1 and group reading activities. This summer we are building on the foundation created last summer ny introduncing assessment tools to measure the impact the VISTAs have on summer school.

Relations: The Minnesota Literacy Council has develpoed strong working relationships with partners in the summer program.
